Declaration of Pasos de Cambios
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Our organizations once again join forces to call on all organizations that have signed the Agreement for Democracy to participate in the coordination and promotion of a political, economic, and social transition in accordance with the principles of the Agreement for the progress of our nation.
We warn that Cuba is experiencing the conditions of a failed state. Last Friday, October 18th, the electrical service was interrupted throughout the entire country, leaving millions of Cubans without power and consequently without water, internet, or transportation. The consequences have been devastating: widespread hunger, closed schools, patients dying in hospitals, and rising crime. The energy collapse catalyzed dozens of peaceful protests that were violently repressed by the repressive forces. The arbitrary arrests of the past few days are added to the more than a thousand prisoners of conscience, exacerbating the political and social crisis.
The tragedy of recent days continues the deep crisis that the Cuban people are suffering as a result of the imposition of a system that does not work; whose leaders do not have the capacity or the will to provide a way out of the economic collapse, nor to respect fundamental freedoms and human dignity.
We warn that the State-Party in Cuba is incapable of carrying out basic functions, such as the provision of essential public services and the protection against natural disasters. The regime’s leaders have no legitimacy whatsoever within the country and are responsible for the humanitarian crisis, rampant corruption, systematic human rights abuses, and the implementation of state terrorism against citizens.
We call on democratic governments to stop all forms of financing the repressive apparatus in Cuba, to pressure the dictators to submit to the will of the citizens for democratic change, and to support the points of the Agreement for Democracy.
To all officials, directors, and subordinates, in the National Assembly, all civil and military ministries, and regional governments throughout the island, we call on you to disregard the call for repressive actions and to take the side of the Cuban people.
To all Cubans who are suffering and fighting, we reiterate: you are not alone, the Cuban nation lives both inside and outside the island, we are one people and we will not stop until we recover freedom, homeland, and life.
