The Foundation NewGeneration expresses its deep concern and strongly condemns the recent visit of the President of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, to Venezuela, as well as his meeting with Nicolás Maduro, leader of the Venezuelan regime. This visit and the resulting meeting have revealed clear omissions and actions that sadly undermine the fundamental principles of democracy and human rights.

It is unacceptable that during this encounter, President Petro chose not to unequivocally condemn the reign of terror imposed by the Chavista government in Venezuela. The Venezuelan people have suffered immensely under the yoke of an authoritarian regime that has restricted their fundamental freedoms, causing humanitarian crises, political repression, and economic deterioration. President Petro’s refusal to recognize and denounce these crimes against humanity is an act of complicity that cannot be tolerated.

Furthermore, we deeply regret that President Petro chose not to meet with the leaders of the Unitary Platform, who represent a broad coalition of democratic forces and Venezuelan citizens committed to the restoration of democracy in their country. This decision is a blatant disregard for those who bravely fight for freedom and justice in Venezuela.

The Foundation NewGeneration reaffirms its steadfast support for the Venezuelan people in their quest for freedom, democracy, and justice. We urge President Petro and all political leaders internationally to stand in solidarity with the Venezuelans and actively commit to defending human rights and democracy in Venezuela. We cannot remain indifferent to the systematic violations of fundamental rights perpetrated by the Maduro regime.

It is imperative that the international community unites in solidarity with the Venezuelan people and puts pressure on the Maduro regime to be held accountable for its actions and restore democracy in Venezuela.
